We stopped in Amritsar, a city in the State of Punjab, just to see the famous Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. The Temple has been built in the 16th century but suffered major damage in the war against the Mughals. In the 19th century Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab region and covered the top part of the Temple in pure gold, giving it the name "The Golden Temple".
