Fatehpur Sikri (India)

23rd May 2011:
After spending the morning at Agra Fort, we took the local bus to Fatehpur Sikri, situated 40km from Agra.  Fatehpur Sikri is the combination of the 2 villages: Fatehpur & Sikri, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. This city has been entirely built by the Emperor Akbar in 1570 who visited the village of Sikri to consult the Sufi Saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who predicted the birth of an heir to the Mughal Throne. When the prophecy came true, Akbar built his new capital here, including a mosque in honour of the Saint and 3 palaces for each of his 3 wives: 1 Hindu, 1 Muslim and 1 Christian. Due to the area's water shortage the city was abandoned shortly after Akbar's death, giving the city the name of "Ghost city".
We absolutely loved this city, especially for the combination of 3 architectural styles: Hindu, Muslim and Christian.

This is the amazing local bus, obviously it's empty just because we were early.
He has to kill time...

The Buland Darwaza: The 54m high entrance of Fatehpur Sikri complex.

The kids didn't leave us alone for the whole afternoon... trying to sell us anything or asking for money.

The outer wall of the site.

Inside the complex.

Jama Masjid: The Mosque.

Entrance of the Mosque.

The whole complex is built with red sandstone. In late afternoon the colours were amazing.
Diwan-i-Khas: Hall of private audience.
